Central iSchool (On-Line) Registration Policies 2005-2006

Semester-Based and Distributed Delivery On-line Classes through Central iSchool

Saskatchewan Learning and the Educational Technology Consortium have partnered to provide on-line classes in a distributed delivery model on a semester basis to Saskatchewan students. The Educational Technology Consortium is a partnership of all major educational partners in the K-12 sector and include:
  • Saskatchewan Teacher’s Federation
  • Saskatchewan Association of School Business officials
  • League of Educational Administrators, Directors and Superintendents of Saskatchewan
  • Saskatchewan School Boards Association
  • Saskatchewan Learning.

How Does the Central iSchool On-line Delivery Work?
These classes follow a traditional “term” – that is Semester 1 classes must be completed by the end of January and Semester 2 classes must be completed by the end of June. Class size is limited to 25 learners, with a maximum of 10 learners from one school in any one class, so early registration is advised. Students must have access to a computer, the Internet and e-mail. Courses are delivered through a web-based learning and teaching system called Blackboard Learning System. The web site at www.centralischool.ca provides students and teachers access to additional information regarding the Central iSchool program. Each school or receive site is responsible to provide a designated facilitator to act as a resource person and guide for students at a distance and liaison with the on-line teacher.

Inquiries regarding Central iSchool course registration and course information should be directed to the SGCS-Operations Unit of the E-Learning Branch. The e-mail address is sgcs.info@sasked.gov.sk.ca.

Interactive Televised Instruction (ITI) Registration Policies 2005-2006

Semester-Based and Classroom-Based Classes through Interactive Televised Instruction

Interactive Televised Instruction provides school-age and adult learners with an alternative method to access high school courses. Course offerings are provided in partnership with Saskatchewan Distance Learning Centre and four broadcast schools:
  • Regina School Division No. 4 (Campbell Collegiate)
  • Lanigan School Division No. 40 (Viscount Central)
  • Swift Current Comprehensive High School Board No. 130 (Swift Current Comprehensive High School)
  • Saskatoon Public School Division No.13.
On behalf of Saskatchewan Learning, Saskatchewan Communications Network (SCN) provides and maintains the technical infrastructure and delivery services to support the distribution of K-12 and postsecondary televised courses, and operates the help desk, providing technical assistance to distance learning sites. SCN uses satellite transmission to deliver the program, providing students access to an instructor’s classroom from a distance.

How does Interactive Televised Instruction work?
Interactive Televised Instruction provides a student the opportunity to feel they are part of a classroom setting; however, the on-air classroom teacher cannot see them. Students at a distance view the classroom on a television and communicate with the on-air classroom teacher by telephone, fax, and Internet communication. Each school, or receive site, is responsible to provide a designated facilitator to act as a resource person and guide for students at a distance, and to act as liaison with the on-air teacher. In addition, each receive site is responsible to arrange access to a telephone, fax machine and Internet access for student-teacher contact, tutoring, and information exchange.

Courses may use on-line and/or paper-based course materials to support the student learning. Each class is also available via streaming video (live and archived). The video streams can be accessed from any high speed Internet connected computer at the discretion of the instructor.

Inquiries regarding Interactive Television course registration and course information should be directed to the SGCS-Operations Unit of the E-Learning Branch. The email address is sgcs.info@sasked.gov.sk.ca.
